Commander's Corner

Greetings,

The Labelle Swamp Cabbage Festival was action packed and as usual the Post was full with activities and great food. I would like to thank all that participated in the Swamp Cabbage Day Parade and in all the Post activities.

This time of year the Post Commander delivers his message about all the great things that took place during Swamp Cabbage weekend, however I would like to reflect on one particular day, which made a big impression on me. The Post was visited By Dan McKinney; Dan is a combat Veteran that served in Vietnam alongside of Nicholas Cutinha. Post 130 is the proud caretaker for Nicholas's Medal of Honor, which is on Display in the Post Hall. What made this day so spectacular was that by mere chance, Roy Cutinha, Nicholas's older brother, also visited the Post and for the first time Dan and Roy met and remembered their fallen brother Nick.

March 2nd 2010 marks the 42nd anniversary of Nicholas' sacrifice while serving his nation. There will be a memorial wreath placed at his gravesite at the Fort Denaud Cemetery at 12:00 PM and everyone is welcome to attend.

God Bless our Country and the men and women who defend it.

For God and Country
Tony Alvarez, Commander Post 130

From the Post Adjutant

91 years ago this month, in March of1919, a group of nearly a thousand military officers and enlisted men met in Paris France. With some lengthy discussions they drafted a temporary constitution for a new organization. This was the beginning of what we now know as the AMERICAN LEGION. These were the men that later, in May of 1919, met in St Louis to further advance the power of their new organization.

Their efforts were to be rewarded with a charter, recognized and granted by the Congress of the United States. With their diligence the United States had their first officially recognized patriotic veterans' organization. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR AMERICAN LEGION.

May our national officers always be successful securing the rights and treatment for our active duty men and women and veterans.

For God and Country,
Carl Pretz, Adjutant.

American Legion Riders

It is SO nice to look back on February and see just what teamwork and dedication can do. To all who worked so hard at Swamp Cabbage Festival, thank you from all of Chapter 130. Our Post, our Chapter and most importantly, our City enjoyed one of the best festivals ever. Tremendous thanks to Kurt and Turtle from Events x D'Zign who did a great job at organizing the event.

Our Chapter is involved in a very special Poker Run on 20 March 2010. This run, organized to benefit the American Legion Legacy Scholarship is the first time four Chapters have worked together towards our common goal. Chapters 323, 336, 90 and 130 from Lehigh Acres, N. Ft. Myers, Cape Coral and LaBelle are sponsoring the event. My personal thanks to Ray and Jack from 323 and 336, respectively, for doing a great job in getting the ball rolling.

We're also planning the 7th Annual Chapter 130 Poker Run to be held on 10 April 2010. I urge all Chapter members to attend our next meeting on 24 March. Get involved and let us all show how proud we are to wear the ALR patch.

For God and Country,
Ray 'Bouncer' Leventhal, Director

From the Chaplain

The family of Stan Brown wrote to thank the Post for the Post Everlasting ceremony we conducted in his honor. Post 130 has elected to purchase a brick for the Veteran's Memorial Park in memory of Stan.

It seems as if our Honor Guard is doing overtime lately. Please join me in saluting their efforts in paying proper respect to the veterans of our community and our great nation.

Sam Renfro, Post Chaplain
