Monthly Newsletter for October 2009
Volume 4, Issue 10
It is often said that one person can't make a difference. What about 10 people, or 20, how about 4.2 million, can they make a difference, will all those voices go un-heard, doubtful. That's why our collective membership in The American legion is so important. Together our voices will be heard and our Veterans will be protected. The more members we have the louder our voice will be, try and encourage your family and friend that are eligible to join The American Legion Family. Veterans and their families are one of our nations most valuable resources.
I would like to thank the many members that stepped up to the plate and helped with installation of the walk-in freezer and especially those members that braved the pouring rain and installed 66 Memorial Bricks at the LaBelle Veterans Memorial Park, Thank You.
For God and Country
Tony Alvarez, Commander Post 130
October starts the weekly Friday Fish Fry and Monday Bingo schedules. Sunday morning breakfasts also return, alternating between the Legion and the Auxiliary - see the calendar for more details as the Auxiliary will be serving brunch on one of their Sundays each month.
The Post Commander, Auxiliary President, Auxiliary 1st Vice and I attended the district meeting at Post 135 in Naples. Several points of interest came from this meeting including new information for veterans with ALS (Lou Gehrig Syndrome) - info on available treatment can be obtained from the Veteran's Service Officer. A motion was made and approved to have joint meetings with the Auxiliary and to include the Riders and SAL at all District 13 Meetings.
The District 13 Boys State Chairman inform us that funding for the selected candidates wasn't a problem but that donations for renting buses for transportation is needed and would be welcome.
For God and Country.
Carl Pretz, Adjutant.

Last months' meeting was very productive-our calendar is full for the winter! Thank you to all that attended our meeting and to the ladies on the calendar committee. We have a very full year and will need volunteers to help us in our programs and events. Any and all help will be appreciated whether it is making phone calls, cooking, cleaning or just offering someone a ride to an event. If you would like to volunteer for upcoming events please call me at 863 675-1194.
Don't forget to bring in your DVD's for "Make a Difference Day" for Veterans and patients at the nursing homes to our next meeting October 15, 2009 at 7:00p.m. or you may give them to any officer of the Auxiliary.
And to Betty Barrett- Our prayers are with you always.
Thank you for all your support!
Love you all!
Candy Alvarez, President Unit 130

The lounge has entertainment every Friday and Saturday. Come and enjoy the fun and camaraderie. Summer almost behind us, we want to thank those who supported our Post and Lounge.
We are looking forward to seeing all our friends from the North.
Don't forget our Annual Halloween Party on the 31st of October • Music by PeeWee. Prizes for best costumes.
Thanks again,
Your Bartenders
We're ramping up to the "Halloweenie Run" on 24 October, one week before Halloween. While planning for this event, lets remember that other Chapters in our area also host events which we should support through attendance.
2 ALR Chapters, 254 (North Port) and 323 (Lehigh Acres) have runs coming up on 10 October and 17 October, respectively. Signup Sheets and KSU times will be posted on our bulletin board — please attend and show support for our brothers and sisters - remember they're ALR and they stand for the same things we do - Our Veterans.
Thanks to Run Coordinator Bob Mims for laying out an awesome route. Our reputation for great rides continues!
If you want to volunteer to help with the Halloweenie Run please use the contact form to email Chapter 130 and let us know. The Halloweenie Run Flyer is online here. Print 'em as needed and hand 'em out!

Florida Chapter 130
It's that time of year where we encourage all members to pay 2010 dues; early renewal includes the Early Bird dinner.
Congratulations to Dave Johnson on being appointed the Kitchen Committee Chairman and we are glad to participate in the Committee. After attending the Legion planning meeting it looks like a very busy and successful year ahead. Just ask an SAL member if you need help in the kitchen.
The SAL has voted to provide finger food for Marine Corps Day, November 10th, pending approval.
We're always looking for ways to help our Post and, in turn, our community and our Veterans. SAL members are encouraged to attend our meetings so we can do just that.
God Bless our Post and Our Troops.
Craig Bartoshuk, 2nd Vice Commander
Squadron 130
Hello Everyone,
I'm sad to report the loss of a member, Mae Bush, who passed away. Our prayers go out to her family. Two members are on sick call this month: Bluebird was airlifted to the hospital for high blood pressure. He's stable now and currently in Tennessee. Cutty suffered a mild stroke. Paula and I visited him in the hospital. He is doing well and should be discharged soon.
I'd like to thank all the volunteers that came out in the rain to lay bricks at the Veterans Memorial Park. It was a miserable, rainy day but the volunteers pressed on with pride. I noticed one couple who came out to see their son's brick being placed. When I saw how they gazed upon their son's brick, holding each other, it made all the hard work worth while. I'm proud of our Post and the way it serves our community.
Sam Renfro, Chaplain
